Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
