The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
