Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
